  The Lesson of Simplicity and Purity – A Story from the Ramakrishna Math In the early days of the Ramakrishna Math, the young monks, full of enthusiasm but not yet matured in wisdom, approached the head Swami with a request. “Swamiji,” they said, “we are spending too much time sweeping floors, washing utensils, and cooking food—chores traditionally done by women. We feel it would be more appropriate to hire some elderly women to handle these tasks, so we can focus more on our spiritual practices.” The Swami listened patiently but said nothing in reply. That evening, he quietly made a small change. When preparing their simple meal, he added an extra amount of salt—so much that the food was nearly inedible. After serving the meal, he closed the Math's main door from the outside and left without a word, going to his own quarters nearby. The monks were locked in.
