Valentine’s Day – A Historical Tale Today, February 14 is celebrated across the world as Valentine’s Day . Flowers, greetings, gifts, and expressions of love mark the occasion. But behind this modern celebration lies an old historical tale. During the time of the Roman Empire, Emperor Claudius ruled the land. He believed that soldiers who were married or in love would think about their families and lose focus on the battlefield. In his view, “love and family weaken a warrior’s spirit.” So, he banned soldiers from getting married. At that time, there lived a Christian priest named Valentine . He saw love as sacred and natural to human life. Witnessing the pain of young couples who were forbidden to marry, he secretly performed marriages for them, defying the emperor’s order. When this reached Claudius, Valentine was arrested and imprisoned. Even in prison, he did not give up his belief in love and compassion. Eventually, on February 14, around 270 AD, he was sentenced to death. ...
